Move around a source¶
Finding the frame is most of marking. Everything here is remappable in Settings › Remap Hotkeys….
Play and shuttle¶
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| Space | Play or pause |
| L | Play forward. Tap again for 2x, 4x, 8x, then back to 1x |
| K | Pause |
Shuttle audio is pitch-corrected, so a voice at 2x is still a voice. There is no reverse shuttle: J is deliberately unbound, because reverse playback stutters badly enough that it would be worse than not having it. L wrapping back to 1x is the keyboard route back down.
Step and jump¶
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| Left / Right | Step one frame |
| Shift+Left / Shift+Right | Step ten frames |
| Home / End | Jump to the start or end of the source |
| Alt+Left / Alt+Right | Previous or next marker |
| Shift+Alt+Left / Shift+Alt+Right | Previous or next shot, selecting it |
That last row is worth its own sentence. It lands the playhead on each shot's in point and selects the shot as it goes, so reviewing a batch is jump, Del, jump, without touching the mouse.
The source timeline¶
The timeline under the viewer spans the whole source.
| Gesture | Does |
|---|---|
| Click the ruler | Seek to that frame |
| Click a shot band | Select it. Ctrl or Shift click adds to the selection |
| Double-click a shot band | Jump the playhead to it |
| Click empty space | Deselect everything |
| Drag a band, or either end | Move the shot, or its in or out point |
| Wheel | Step one frame |
| Ctrl wheel | Pan |
| Alt wheel | Zoom, keeping the frame under the cursor where it is |
| Alt middle-drag | Zoom the same way: drag right to zoom in, left to zoom out |
The playback range¶
The two fields under the transport buttons set a playback range: the part of the source the timeline shows and playback loops within. It is a view, not an edit. It changes nothing about the source or any shot, and it is there so a long film can be worked in sections.
The bar between the fields is the range slider, laid out the way Maya's is: the outer numbers are the whole source, the inner fields are the range. Drag the bar's middle to pan the range, drag either end to resize it, and double-click it to go back to the full source. Double-click again and it returns to the range you had, the way Maya's does. Each of those, and a typed field, is one Ctrl+Z step. The reel's timeline has the same row.
Ctrl+L cycles the loop mode.
