Cards

A card is a clip with no footage behind it. Three kinds, all dragged from the Features tab, all starting at five seconds and trimmed like any other clip.

Drop it where it should sit on the timeline. The clips around it move aside, exactly as they do for a shot.

What happens

A card is a real clip. It holds for a length you set, it takes fades, it counts against the budget, and it exports as picture like everything else. What it does not have is a source shot, so it has no metadata and an overlay template that prints shot fields has nothing to print on it. That is what a title card is for: its text is the template's own.

A color card plus a fade is how you end a reel on black for a beat, rather than cutting to nothing.
